General Oddities
As you've probably noticed, there are a lot of odd things on the Web. Herewith a selection. Note — this sort of thing tends to come and go unpredictably. My apologies if the links don't work; presumably, somebody ran out of bandwidth or got hit with a takedown notice. Or just got bored.
Fight! Kikkoman
Flash animation. Strangely enough, this does not seem to be an ad for soy sauce. There's an English version floating around; I find it much more fun to speculate.
Notes:
- The Japanese word for soy sauce is
shoyu
, pronouncedshow you
. - In fast food places in Japan, soy sauce is sometimes served in little plastic fish- shaped single serving containers.
Hello Cthulhu
One of the staples of fan fiction is the crossover
—
dropping characters from one universe into another universe. An example
would be having the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars run by the cast of
Cheers. You know darn well that the copyright owners would never let
this happen in the real
media world, so the fans will do it for
them.
Now, there are some universes that simply shouldn't be mixed. This one is a prime example, where Hello Kitty meets H. P. Lovecraft's Great Old Ones. Brrrr.
The Random Plot Generator
The worthy sucessor to the Evil Overlord List. (Don't miss Cellblock A and Cellblock B.) Rather than concentrate on the Evil Overlord him/her/itself, some advice for more characters, along with the EO.
Also contains Murphy's Laws of Combat
, which are nowhere near as
funny.
HumanDescent
A collection of Photoshopped pictures of various people and animals. Some are beautiful, some are disturbing. All are extraordinarily well done.
Trojan Games
The other Olympics. Not even remotely safe for work (check out the logo!) Uses Java and Flash.
I'll bet this one would have gotten much higher TV ratings than
the real
Olympics .... (Hey, if we really had a
liberal press
we'd have this sort of thing on TV!)
A Heap of Trouble
Also called 9 Naked Men. Not safe for work, although it has a PG rating in Britan. (Tells ya something, don' it?) The site is seriously slow.
Kit says it's an allegory on Liberation Theology; I say it's just weird.
